Aside from two Monday holidays this month, January is a time for us to make one of our biggest academic pushes of the school year. Everyone is well rested and focused, which is great to see. January brings some exciting events to Melinda Heights and we hope to see everyone at Tutto Fresco in RSM for our Family Dine out night on Wednesday, January 18 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. This supports our PTA and all of their wonderful programs. Wishing you a great start to your new year! |

With a new calendar year well underway, I am realizing once again how quickly time flies in a school setting. We have already been getting many questions and phone calls from potential Kindergarten parents for next year. While we still have quite awhile before next year begins (and many things to do for the current year), we have already begun our preparation for activities well into next year. Here are a few noteworthy school-wide events on the horizon...
School Choice window closes- February 4 PTA food drive- Week of February 7-11 "Taste of Melinda" family fun night- February 10 2nd Trimester Parent Conference Week- March 14- 21 Spring Break- April 18-22 6th Grade Camp- April 25-29 Kindergarten Round Up (for incoming Kindergarten parent registration)- May 2-6 STAR State Testing "window"- First two weeks of May Teacher Appreciation Week- May 31-June 3 Open House- June 2 Last day of school- June 21
Along with many assemblies, class projects, fire drills, and field trips, you can see how things get pretty busy around Melinda Heights.
School Tours If you live in, or are moving to our school attendance area, I would be happy to show you around the school. These monthly 15 minute group tours focus on outdoor areas of our campus, so as not to disrupt instructional time. This is a great opportunity to ask questions, introduce yourselves, and become familiar with the main part of our campus. Please call our front office at (949) 888-7311 to get signed up for our next tour date and time.

Below are a few notes about current events at Melinda Heights...
Student Safety: We recently completed our district-wide fall disaster drill where our scenario included practicing for an earthquake. This type of drill is much bigger than our monthly fire drill, and therefore takes a lot of coordination and cooperation between staff and students. Melinda Heights did an outstanding job during the drill, and we continue to update all of our services and policies as result of the feedback we get from such drills.
Student Health: Our PTA-sponsored Health/Red Ribbon Week was also a wonderful success. Student dress up days were planned as a small part of the school-wide events. While we focus on healthy habits throughout the year, Health Week was a great time to educate, focus, and practice healthy routines. Thank you to all of our volunteers who helped with our Jog-A-Thon. Our students appreciate your enthusiasm!
Parent Conferences: The week of November 15-19 brings us our first set of parent conferences. Not only is this a great time to discuss the academic progress of your child, it is also a wonderful opportunity to ask questions and get to know our teachers. Each 20 minute conference offers an overview of the report card and a brief summary of student progress.
Upcoming Holidays/Furlough Days: November 11 and 12- No school (Veteran's Day and California Admission Day) November 22-26- No school (Thanksgiving and furlough days)
PTA Toy Drive: Our PTA will be accepting donations the week of November 29-December 3. Please look for more details (coming soon) in our PTA newsletter.

On behalf of the wonderful staff at Melinda Heights, welcome back to what is sure to be another fantastic school year. I look forward to seeing everyone on September 13 and getting to know you all better as the year progresses. It is a pleasure for me to introduce myself as part of the staff and administrative team. I am coming to Melinda Heights most recently from Cielo Vista Elementary School where I spent the last 12 years as an administrator and teacher. Mrs. Lake and I have been collaborating throughout the summer to ensure a successful and safe start to the 2010/2011 school year. I have found out quickly what many of you in our community have known for a long time -- our teachers and support staff are an amazing, hard-working group of people. I feel blessed to work at such an remarkable school with such a hospitable community.
I will have updated information on this page as often as possible. Please check in on occasion to see recent budget, facility, staff, and social announcements.
Adopt-A-Planter: Melinda Heights is continuing with our long-standing Adopt-A-Planter tradition. For those of you who are unaware, many of our well-appointed planters around our campus have been adopted by local groups, individuals, and classes. These sponsors maintain and support each of their planters to preserve the ongoing elegance of our facility. Most of our planters have been adopted for this year, but we still have a few open for interested parties. Adopt-A-Planter participant responsibilities include the following:
- Commit to the care and maintenance of the
planter for one year
- Provide plants, materials, etc. through
purchase or solicited donations
- Plant aesthetically pleasing flowers,
plants, bushes, and shrubs when necessary (please no poisonous plants,
fruit tees, vegetable plants, etc.)
- Maintain the planter by fertilizing,
trimming, pruning, weeding, and watering when necessary
Although the joy of bringing beauty to our campus is rewarding in itself, we are also pleased to give you the option of placing a sponsorship plaque in your planter should you be interested. Please contact me if you are intrigued by the opportunity of adopting one of our remaining planters or if you have any further questions.
Regards, Mr. Morrow (949) 888-7311 |
